This is a story which will inspire you. This honest story shows how one man, with the support of his family, has taken responsibility for his health and turned his life around! (Please consult your doctor before engaging in exercise regimes.)
As a late teen & into my early 20's I was into cars & alcohol. Every weekend I was either working on cars or parting it up with mates, no real consideration was every given to diet, consequentially, it was Maccas, KFC or the local fish & chips shop for brekky, lunch & dinner. I weighed 72kgs.
At the age of 22, I started to work rotating afternoon & night shift which saw my non-existent diet turned inside out. I was eating very irregularly & would struggle to have a decent meal every couple of days or so. Again, it was "deep fried delights" and Coke for every meal, including breakfast. Weekends were another opportunity to drink copious amounts of alcohol. By the age of 28 I had been doing this for 6 years with total disregard for health or longevity. I weighed 110kgs.
By the time I weighed 128kgs, things had to change. Having never seen myself as overweight before, I was more than shocked & disgusted & started to diet & exercise, mainly walking.
It was at this stage when I started to force myself to drink water instead of alcohol & when I was hungry I drank water & ate salad, a 180 degree turn from where I had been. I had even changed what I did for a living, I moved from production as a bookbinder & worked myself into a position as a sales rep in the printing industry. I also moved house. The weight was dripping off. By April 2008, I was 100kgs.
My biggest problem though, was that even though the weight was falling off, I was feeling worse than I did when I was fat. I had pain everywhere in my body. When I went to sleep at night, I could feel my heart pounding like it was trying to get out of my chest & my legs were constantly burning. My water consumption was up to 4 litres a day & I was going to the toilet nearly every hour.
One day I was driving home from work & my vision blurred, greyed & I started seeing stars. I was at my GP within the hour. I knew something was wrong. I had blood tests & my doctor said to me "It doesn't sound good". The next 24 hours were excruciating while I waited for my blood test results.
The results: I was diagnosed with type 2 Diabetes - my blood sugar was at 22, my cholesterol 9.5. I should have been dead!
I joined Go Health within a few weeks of that day & have never looked back.
My weight is 90, my glucose level is between 6 & 7 and my cholesterol is down to 3.5.
I go to the gym several days a week and ride my bike 20ks every other day.
It has been 9 months since my diagnosis & I am 40 years old. I am now very body proud. I have a passion for my life & the people I share it with.
