There is Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes. There is also Gestational Diabetes and pre-diabetes (impaired glucose intolerance).
Type 1 Diabetes (insulin dependent) represents 122,300 Australians, with 6 new cases every day. Australia has one of the highest cases in the world. (It is different in many ways to Type 2 Diabetes).
It is not from feeding your child too much sugar. There is no cure, it is an autoimmune disease. You do not grow out of it. You don't just have to give insulin - it is more complex than that. It is a day and night management regime of balancing blood glucose levels and daily life i.e. stress, sport and hormones. Think about it, children from a very young age are needing numerous needles, sometimes up to 5 a day, everyday to stay ALIVE. Courageous hey...
Complications are kidney failure, blindness, heart disease, stroke, amputation, and pregnancy complications. For more info go to JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundaiton) www.jdrf.org.au
Our two girls live with type 1 diabetes and are on insulin pumps. Our eldest daughter has been living with diabetes for 10 years and is only 12. Our other daughter is now 9, diagnosed three years ago. The girls are Youth Ambassadors, Diabetes Australia Qld for a Schools Diabetes Basics Program being implemented in all schools in Queensland. We have also spoken at Parliament House this year on World Diabetes Day.
Type 2 Diabetes (non-insulin dependent) Diabetes is Australia's fastest growing chronic disease. About 1,200,000 Australians are officially diagnosed with diabetes. However for every one diagnosed, another is undiagnosed. More than 3.5 million Australians have diabetes or pre-diabetes. Worldwide - 285 million people have diabetes.
Diabetes is the sixth highest cause of death by disease in Australia;
People with diabetes are twice as likely to have high blood pressure and are more likely to have elevated blood fats e.g. cholesterol, triglycerides,
They are two times more likely to have cardiovascular disease, e.g. heart disease & stroke,
One in 4 Australian adults have either diabetes or impaired glucose metabolism.
